Lee Spencer

Assistant Bosun

Biography:

Tavistock-based Lee Spencer had 24 years service with the Royal Marines under his belt when a freak accident on the M3 motorway in January 2015 ended up with him losing his right leg and injuring his left. A veteran of several tours of Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan, Lee was already a committed fundraiser for the Royal Marines Charity, but now he is an ambassador, giving regular talks about the work of the armed forces and service charities.

Just 11 months after losing his leg, Lee and three other veterans rowed 'unsupported' across the Atlantic in the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge as part of the Row2Recovery crew. "I want to show that there is life beyond disability, and that I am not defined by it," says Lee. "That's a message which I hope our mission with Team Britannia will deliver to others right across the world. I miss the camaraderie that comes from being part of a team, so I'm really looking forward to getting stuck in to it."
